Virginia coming down to the wire

With the election in Virginia coming down to the wire, now is our last
chance to make sure that Virginia elects Creigh Deeds as it's next
governor. Deeds needs a strong Get Out the Vote operation to put him
over the top, and he's relying on volunteers like you to make it happen!

There is a special need for volunteers to help out in McLean, Virginia
on election day, answering a hotline for people with polling questions:

Boycott Whole Foods for Opposing Health Reform, Labor Rights

From Progressive Maryland: Whole Foods Opposes Health Reform, Labor
Rights-- Boycott & Help Progressive Md. & Allies Leaflet/Picket the
Silver Spring Store, Fenton & Wayne Ave. Sundays 9 am- Noon, Oct. 25 &
Nov. 1 (rain or shine)

Did you know Whole Foods CEO John Mackey:
* Strongly opposes President Obama's health care reforms? (Read his
op-ed in Wall Street Journal, Aug. 12, 2009:
http://www.progressivemaryland.org/public/documents/CLIPS-TopStories/2009/aug/2009_8_12_wsj_whole_foods_ceo.pdf
* Believes Americans have no right to health care, food & shelter?
* Fires employees who dare to organize themselves into a union?

Mr. Mackey uses the money customers spend at Whole Foods to promote
myths and propaganda created by the insurance industry and big drug
companies to derail health care reform, and to prevent his workers from
forming a union. Recent polls continue to show a large majority of
Americans want a "public option" in any health care reform bill. Our
weekly leafleting is turning away hundreds, raising awareness, and
building the nationwide boycott.

Help leaflet Whole Foods and send Mackey a message.

Sunday, October 25 support the re-election of Marc Elrich

Please join us Sunday, October 25 To support the re-election of
Montgomery County Council Member Marc Elrich

Time: 4:00pm to 6:00pm
Place: The home of Diana and Bill Conway
10600 River Road
Potomac, MD 20854
(Less than one mile northwest of the intersection of River Road and
Great Falls Road)
http://tinyurl.com/ElrichEvent

Dear Friends,

It's that time again! The election cycle is swinging into (higher) gear.

This Sunday afternoon, join fellow activists and quite a few elected
officials at the home of Diana and Bill Conway for a casual but critical
fund raiser for Montgomery County Council Member Marc Elrich.

Marc brings to public office a rare blend of intelligence, integrity,
commitment, compassion and common sense. I've witnessed Marc's good work
for more than a decade -- as a community advocate, a Takoma Park City
Council Member and now as a County Council Member -- on a wide range of
environmental, social and economic issues.

He digs into the issues, does his homework and bucks political head
winds on tough issues. The stakes in this election are, as always, high.

The County Council is Montgomery County's pre-eminent transportation and
land use authority. It selects the members of the county Planning Board,
and through policies, laws and budget decisions sets the county's
priorities on education, public health, public safety, housing, economic
development, global warming, energy, air quality, habitat conservation,
farmland preservation, watershed protection, and many other issues.

Marc takes no contributions from developers, and he has been one of too
few elected officials who has been willing to speak out consistently and
forcefully against wasteful, destructive projects like the Intercounty
Connector.

This is no mean feat given that Marc serves in a county-wide, at-large
seat on the County Council, in a county where developers, road builders
and their friends have in recent elections all but swamped our elections
with special-interest campaign cash.

Marc's successful 2006 campaign was powered by grassroots energy and
contributions, and with our help, he can win again in 2010 running the
same kind of focused, issues-driven campaign.

Join us this Sunday!

Bill and Diana have generously opened their home for this event, and
we're all hoping for a great turnout and a significant boost to Marc's
campaign for re-election.

There will be plenty of catered food & drink (including local cider,
wines & cheeses), and many elected officials on hand including County
Executive Ike Legget, State Comptroller Peter Franchot, State Attorney
General Doug Gansler, some of Marc's fellow council members, and many
state delegates and senators from across the county.

So lots of elected arms to twist on your favorite topic.

If you cannot join us Sunday....

Please consider sending a contribution to support Marc's important work
on behalf of us all.

Contributions should be sent to: Friends of Marc Elrich
8100 Sligo Creek Parkway

Please RSVP

To RSVP, send a quick note to: rsvp@marcelrich.com

thanks and I hope to see you Sunday at Diana's and Bill's!

Greg Smith

TIME TO DELIVER CALLING PARTY -- SILVER SPRING

From Tony Hausner:

There will be health reform phonebanks during a number of days in the
next two weeks and possibly beyond. Calls will be made to supportive
voters in key states during these sessions. The goal is to get these
voters to call their Senators and/or their Representatives to Congress.
Both houses will be voting soon and these calls are coming at a critical
time in this decision. I encourage everyone to participate in these
phonebanks and to spread the message as widely as possible to persons in
the Silver Spring and Takoma park areas. For persons outside of this
immediate area, advise them to get involved by going to Obama's
grassroots Organizing for America at http://www.barackobama.com

TIME TO DELIVER CALLING PARTY -- SILVER SPRING (Downtown
Tues. 10/20, 6-9 PM @ Alan Banov and Associates, 8401 Colesville Rd.,

We'll call friendly voters whose voices matter in this debate, talk to
them about the President's plan, and ask them to call on their
representatives to support reform. To RSVP, go to:

-----------------

About David Alan Harris, MA, LCAT, BC-DMT, NCC, is a dance/movement
therapist who specializes in fostering resilience and recovery among
survivors of egregious human rights abuse, and war. As a
Clinician/Trainer for the Center for Victims of Torture in rural Sierra
Leone, he supervised a team of paraprofessional trauma counselors
providing therapeutic services in the aftermath of that country's brutal
conflict. He introduced Sierra Leonean and Liberian counselors to
dance/movement therapy (DMT) practice—in 2005, launching the first DMT
group in West Africa; and in 2006, apparently the first DMT group
anywhere for former child combatants.

David has presented on his DMT work at various U.S. and international
gatherings, including the IX International Rehabilitation Council for
Torture Victims Symposium in Berlin, in 2006, four annual conferences of
the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA), and at McGill's Division
of Transcultural Psychiatry in Montreal. The ADTA honored one of David's
academic articles about his dance therapy work with its 2007 Research
Award, and recognized his efforts more broadly, bestowing on him its
Leader of the Future award that year. A 2002 graduate of the Creative
Arts in Therapy program at MCP Hahnemann (now Drexel) University, David
has taught graduate-level courses on trauma treatment at Columbia
College, Chicago, and Naropa University in Boulder.

David also has more than 15 years' experience working for organizations
dedicated to sustainable solutions to the problems of refugees and
asylum-seekers, including for Doctors of the World-USA, the American
Friends Service Committee, and Human Rights Watch. In 2008, the U.S.
Embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe, sponsored a series of training workshops
David and a colleague conducted there, designed to increase the
effectiveness of health professionals and other civil society workers
providing services to survivors of the country's ongoing political violence.

Lobby Day Wednesday, October 14th

Healthcare-NOW!

Dear Friend:

Join us for lobby days for single-payer. On both lobby days, we will break into teams and visit Congressional offices with single-payer amendment materials prepared in advance. As Congress moves closer to voting on whatever final legislation is crafted, we want to make sure the single-payer amendments are strongly supported.

This may be our final opportunity in this legislative cycle to weigh in. The work done now sets the groundwork for the future and for finally achieving single-payer.

House lobby day Wednesday, October 14th

  • Lobby for Weiner HR676 substitute single-payer amendment votes
  • Lobby for protection of Kucinich state single-payer option amendment

We'll have two sessions of lobbying effort one early and one later in the day as we may catch more Members as they finish their floor work. Meet in the Rayburn House Office Building cafeteria at 10 a.m. on Wednesday if you'd like to help lobby Congressional members from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and if you'd like to come in the afternoon, meeting in the Rayburn HOB cafeteria at 2 p.m. to hear reports from the morning crew and get marching orders for the afternoon lobby efforts

Senate lobby day Wednesday, October 21st

  • Lobby for Senator Sanders S. 703 substitute single-payer amendment votes

Meet in the coffee shop between the Dirksen and Hart Senate Office Buildings at 11 a.m. We plan to lobby from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will have lists of Senate targets for your use.

We look forward to having you participate in any or all lobby sessions over the next two weeks.

Thanks for all that you do,

Healthcare-NOW!

Call Congress Now!

Call Now

Ask them to support the Rep. Weiner, Rep. Kucinich, and Sen. Sanders amendments for single-payer healthcare.

Take Action

Dear Healthcare-NOW! Supporter:

Congress will vote on single-payer, Medicare-for-All soon! They need to hear from single-payer supporters from all over the country.

While media coverage of the health reform debate is focused on the Senate Finance Committee's bill (which was largely drafted by current and former executives at Wellpoint, the nation's largest private health insurance company), several congressional votes on single-payer, Medicare-for-All loom on the horizon.

You can help determine the outcome of these votes by calling Congress now.

Ask them to support the Weiner, Kucinich, and Sanders amendments.

Sometime in the next two or three weeks, Rep. Anthony Weiner's (D-NY) amendment to substitute single-payer legislation (along the lines of Rep. Conyers' H.R. 676) for the House leadership's bill, H.R. 3200, will come up for an up-or-down vote on the House floor.

Additionally, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) has secured a provision in H.R. 3200 that would allow individual states to adopt their own single-payer systems.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) will introduce two single-payer amendments to the Senate bill, one to create a national single-payer plan, and the other to allows individual states to adopt single-payer.

Contact Congress today and ask them to vote "yes" on the Weiner, Kucinich, and Sanders amendments for single-payer.

Go here to call for free. It's easy, knows your Representatives, provides a simple call script, and is toll-free. Or, call the Congressional Switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

Thanks for all that you do,
Healthcare-NOW! National Staff

P.S. For more on the Kucinich and Weiner amendments, go here.

Healthcare-NOW! survives on the generosity of our supporters. Please consider making a donation to support our efforts to pass HR 676 using our secure server.

If, as Alice Walker reminds us in her new book, "hard times require
furious dancing", David Alan Harris knows the hard times and the furious
dancing. For the young men and boys he encountered in Sierra Leone, he
provided warmth and the container for fury, through a process called
Dance/Movement Therapy. Harris will share stories of the boys he worked
with in a keynote address as a part of the University of Maryland's
Semester on Peace: Atrocities, Resilience, and Healing: Peace-Building
Lessons from African Child Soldiers. Join him as he inspires us all to
dance with each other, and join us afterwards at the UMUC Marriott Inn
and Conference Center to put all of our energy to music, in a
celebration of resilience and healing!

The Marriott is located at the crossroads of University Boulevard and
Adelphi Roads. 3501 University Blvd E Hyattsville, Maryland.

DAVID ALAN HARRIS, MA, LCAT, ADTR, a leading dance and movement
therapist, will share his work with former child soldiers in Sierra
Leone and other parts of Africa, and with young male survivors of severe
trauma. Combining his careers in human rights advocacy and choreography
to work on the ground in Sierra Leone's Kailahun District, David has
collaborated with local counselors to develop an innovative dance and
movement program to provide treatment for 12 former child soldiers, all
of whom were orphans who survived the brutality of Sierra Leone's
11-year civil war. David's inspiring work has demonstrated that "dance
and movement therapy (DMT) interventions, if designed to promote
cultural relevance and community ownership, may enhance healing among
adolescent survivors of war and organized violence."
