Media Alert: Protest for Equality at White House 8/26/2010

MEDIA ADVISORY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: PROTEST FOR EQUALITY AT WHITE HOUSE

Women and men to rally in front of the White House to tell President Obama, "America Needs a Woman's Touch."
Coalition plans rally and candlelight circle to mark the 90th anniversary of women's suffrage and demand full equality.

Contact: Carolyn Cook, info@united4equality.com 202-309-1963

Who: United for Equality, Responsible for Equality and Liberty, the Montgomery Country MD Chapter of NOW, and the Louisiana ERA Coalition.
What: Rally and candlelight walk hosted by the above organizations.
Why: To Commemorate the 90th anniversary of women's suffrage and demand full equality for women.
Where: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
When: 6:30 pm-9:30 pm Thursday, August 26th, 2010.

United For Equality will lead a rally giving a "Shout Out" to the Obama Administration and to the First Family including Michele, Malia and Sasha Obama. Our message: "America Needs a Woman's Touch." It is critical during this time of economic rebuilding that we dust off the Constitution and eliminate the 2nd class citizenship of women and girls across America. President Obama, as an African American male and constitutional law professor, understands the price of exclusion from our Social Contact. There is no better legacy for him to leave America's daughters than establishing equality and justice for every American regardless of their gender. The event will celebrate an important milestone in American history while highlighting the important work left undone to secure full equality under law for women and girls across the U.S.

Participating Organizations: United for Equality LLC, the Montgomery Country MD Chapter of NOW, and Responsible for Equality And Liberty will hold a protest and candlelight vigil at the White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM on Women's Equality Day, August 26, 2010.

Scheduled Speakers:
-- National Women's History Museum – Senior Vice President, Ann Stone
-- Sewall Belmont House & Museum – Lead Docent, Erin Dexter
-- Business & Professional Women USA – Immediate Past President and Bowie Councilwoman, Honorable Diane Polangin
-- Coalition of Labor Union Women – Executive Director, Carol Rosenblatt
-- Event Hosts – United For Equality, Responsible For Equality & Liberty
-- Open Mike for Women on their views about Women's Rights in America Today

The groups plan candlelight speeches and songs in support of women's equality beginning at 8:15 PM, in support of full Constitutional equality for American women, calling for the passage of the Equality Rights Amendment (E.R.A.).

Join us from 6:30pm to 9:30pm to honor the courage and contributions of our foremothers (and ourselves) on this 90th anniversary of women's suffrage. We invite your organization to join us to symbolize the infinite strength of the women's movement in 2010. Carry signs bearing your organization's mission, and let the common bond for women's equality unite us for an evening.

Event organizer Carolyn Cook of United for Equality says, "The Equal Rights Amendment will open the doors completely to women and girls full participation as co-stewards of America's future whether in the home or in the workplace. It is not a partisan divide. It is a fundamental human right to live with dignity and respect under the law."

Jeffrey Imm, Responsible for Equality and Liberty http://www.realcourage.org/ said, “Men should ask themselves, would just having voting rights be enough for them?  If not, why should they think only voting rights are enough for our sisters, daughters, and mothers in America?  We need to be consistently responsible for equality and liberty, not just for some Americans, but for all Americans."

Activist and blogger Mike Hersh, Men for the ERA, http://MenForTheERA.wordpress.com/ said, "I learned about the Constitution in high school, in college and in law school, and nothing I've read or heard justifies continuing second class citizenship for women and girls. In the spirit of the Declaration of Independence, we should embrace this self-evident truth: All people are created equal. We should step up and fix this glaring Constitutional omission. The time is long past for us to recognize full equality for all."

Camille Moran, Lobbying Director for the Louisiana Coalition of the Equal Rights Amendment, said, “Equality is long overdue for the women of America. We call upon the 35 previously ratified states to stand with the last three states needed to make the ERA the 28th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution."

Promotional materials about the event explain, "Women and girls remain 2nd class citizens (with limited rights) in the US today because sex discrimination has not yet been outlawed under the US Constitution. When Government classifies individuals according to stereotypes about their roles and capabilities, it limits one’s ability to develop to one’s full potential."

Rally and walk participants will call upon "President and Michele Obama, Democrats, Republicans and Independents to eliminate the economic, political and social disparities that legalized sex discrimination has caused in our society," and "honor the collective power of Sisterhood on the 90th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage" by demanding "full legal, political and social rights for every woman and girl" through ratification of the ERA by 2015.

United for Equality, LLC (U4E) is a Washington, DC-based social justice enterprise committed to ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment by 2015.

The DNC is asking Democrats to weigh in voice your views

From Carolyn Cook: We need the ERA

The Equal Rights Amendment was featured on Rachel Maddow show last night! It was included in a segment about how hard it is to pass constitutional amendments. Only the guest, Professor Heather Gerken from Yale Law School said women don't need the ERA any longer because all of our issues have been resolved through the laws and the courts. What????? Can I call Lily Ledbetter on that one?

Please men and women, voice your opinion! Rachel needs to hear from a chorus of Americans, so we can keep this issue being discussed. Education and debate are essential for ERA's expansion. Email Rachel Maddow at Rachel@msnbc.com and Professor Gerken at heather.gerken@yale.edu  and tell both of them that you disagree that we don't need ERA and are standing United 4 Equality to end women and girls' 2nd class citizenship now!

From http://www.opednews.com/articles/The-DNC-is-asking-Democrat-by-MikeHersh-100810-167.html

---------------

The DNC is asking Democrats to weigh in on a poll here: http://my.democrats.org/page/s/demsurvey

Progressive Democrats should voice our views to guide the DNC to victory (and to avoid crushing defeat) at the polls this November.

Among the choices under "How important would you rate the following issues?" none refer to war policies or weapons spending. People who care about those issues have to pick "other" and write in their choice. Also, they offer "Health insurance reform," not health (care) reform. This question presumes insurance companies will continue to profit off, control, and sabotage healthcare in the USA. I answered:

"Ending the wars, redirecting weapons spending to meet human needs including universal single payer healthcare--not 'Health insurance reform' which leaves us at the mercy of exploitive for-profit insurance companies."

There are a few opportunities to make detailed comments, and I answered this way:

How would you describe the current political climate? (Optional):

"Many people are confused and/or angry. The Democratic Party is not assertive enough in articulating a clear, progressive vision for the USA."

What do you believe the Democratic Party stands for? (Optional):

"This is unclear. War and weapons spending keeps increasing. We cannot afford to pay for teachers, police, or health care for all, but we spend $billions on weapons the Pentagon doesn't even want! Why is that? Just before the BP spill, the President announced support for more off-shore drilling. Meanwhile, Senate Democrats cannot pass clean energy policies.

"Conservative Senate Democrats blocked the best reform efforts on healthcare, energy, the stimulus, etc. Most Americans want a strong public option in health care and more stringent Wall St. regulation, but a few Democrats joined the Republicans in the Senate watering down reform.

"We need a larger, quickly deployed stimulus package--along the lines of New Deal policies. Senate Democrats scaled back and delayed the programs. As Paul Krugman, Dean Baker and others explain: Unemployment remains far too high because the stimulus was too small and too slow. This lack of jobs will make elected Democrats lose their jobs, but it didn't have to be this way.

"What does the Democratic Party stand for? If it's not much different from what the Republicans stand for, then what's the point? Harry Truman warned that voters will support real Republicans over me-too Democrats, and polls show that's what happening now. We could expand our majorities, but we will loose several seats because we're not standing up as Democrats for what we (supposedly) believe in. Why are so many elected Democrats afraid to be Democrats when blurring the differences will lead to massive Democratic losses on Election Day?"

Why are you a Democrat? (Optional):

"I hope Democrats will lead the way on creating a better future with peace, clean energy, good-paying domestic jobs, universal healthcare, strict regulation of business, environmental protection, and equality and opportunity for all as the organizing principles--not just empty rhetoric.

"Only the Democratic Party can deliver on the American Dream by standing up for working families and those in need, but we have to return to our shared commitment to these basic goals FDR articulated as the Four Freedoms during his State of the Union Address in 1941: 1. Freedom of speech and expression, 2. Freedom of religion, 3. Freedom from want, 4. Freedom from fear, which he defined as 'a world-wide reduction of armaments,' but which can also mean guaranteed personal security against violence and intimidation by criminals and unwarranted state action.

"These are all basic American, patriotic ideals and winning campaign issues. Nearly all voters support all of these freedoms. Right wing Republicans are out of step with the public because they're unwilling or unable to fully support any of them. To create a clear and superior choice at the polls, Democrats should fully, proudly embrace these freedoms. That means we should provide clear leadership and deliver strong legislation guaranteeing all of them. Seventy years after Roosevelt called for a better, safer, more prosperous world, President Obama will deliver a State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress. Will there be seventy fewer Democrats in Congress to hear him? Unless we lead based on our commitment to making life better for all, we'll fail to lead at all and the voters will punish us for that failure."

The Montgomery County Progressive Alliance is a vital group with over
1500 members working for a better future. We're leading and supporting
efforts and projects on local, state and national issues. We're hosting
candidates for Senate, Governor and other offices as well as elected and
party officials to speak to our members. We're cooperating with local
and national clubs and organizations. We've established strong, friendly
connections and alliances.

We've met regularly since 2003, and sponsored or cosponsored dozens of
events. We promote progressive solutions to achieve a better, more fair
and sustainable society. We focus mainly on issues and events in
Montgomery County, Maryland, and the National Capitol region.

We advance equal and civil rights, clean and safe communities, high
quality health care and education, verified voting, secure retirement,
freedom, fairness and opportunity for all. We founded the MCPA to make a
positive difference on local, state, national and global issues.

We support progressive candidates and promote fair election and campaign
practices to empower people and ensure meaningful participation. We
research and formulate policy, support causes and candidates, and
organize events, fund raisers, and campaigns to advance our ideals.

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue @ White House
(Metro Center or McPherson Square stations)
Rally followed by candlelight walk at dark
For more information or to RSVP, e-mail: info@united4equality.com

Honor the collective power of Sisterhood on the 90th Anniversary of
Women's Suffrage. Bring a sign, a candle and a friend or relative. Join
the Alliance to achieve full legal, political and social rights for
every woman & girl by 2015!

Women and girls remain 2nd class citizens (with limited rights) in the
US today because sex discrimination has not yet been outlawed under the
US Constitution. When Government classifies individuals according to
stereotypes about their roles and capabilities, it limits one's ability
to develop to one's full potential. Stand with us on August 26th to call
for President & Michele Obama, Democrats, Republicans and Independents
to eliminate the economic, political and social disparities that
legalized sex discrimination has caused in our society. Ratify ERA by 2015!

Hosted by: United for Equality, Responsible for Equality and Liberty
(REAL), Montgomery Country Maryland Chapter of the National Organization
for Women, Louisiana ERA Coalition.
